Paul Johansson lahir di Spokane, Washington, putera dari pemain hoki es Earl Johnson, tapi besar di Kelowna, British Columbia[3] Dia juga pernah menekuni sebagai atlet seperti ayahnya dengan bermain bola basket dalam Tim Canadian Olympic Basketball dan University of British Columbia.[4] Setlah emngundurkan diri dari olahraga bola basket, dia mulai menulis, kemudian beralih ke dunia keaktoran.[5][6][7]
